Obituary for Alfred Leon Camillo
Alfred Leon Camillo of Bonne Terre, Missouri, was born on June 2, 1941 in Potosi, Missouri, a son to the late Alfred Henry Camillo and the late Sarah Beulah Warden Camillo. Leon died peacefully surrounded by loved ones on September 24, 2022 reaching the age of eighty-one years, three months, and twenty-two days.
He is survived by his dear lifelong friend, Evangeline Wigger; bonus family: George Emily (wife,Kay), Belinda Link (husband, Ed), and Katie Bourisaw (husband, Gary), as well as many special cousins, friends, and neighbors.
In addition to his parents, Leon was preceded in death by his sister Shirley Ann Camillo, and many other relatives.
Leon made his profession of faith as a teenager at the Furnace Creek Church of God. After graduating high school from Valley School District, he completed his associates degree from Flat River Junior College, and then continued his education at the University of Missouri at Columbia receiving his bachelor’s degree in accounting and business administration. After working several years as an accountant for the Harry Chapman Accounting and Tax Services, Leon started his own business, Camillo Insurance, Accounting, and Tax Services, in 1967.
In addition to being a successful businessman in Washington County, Leon was very active in the local community as a member of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce and Potosi Lion’s Club. He was an original board member of the Meramec Regional Planning Commission which was established in 1969. He was instrumental in the land acquisition and establishment of the Council Bluffs Lake and Recreation Area. After supplying earnest money to hold the acreage in 1972, Leon, as the park board chairman, played a large role in the application for matching state and federal grants to purchase the land for the Potosi City Park, dedicated in May of 1974. Additionally, Leon played a contributary part in developing a nonrefundable bond program enabling the community to acquire the land for the Washington County Industrial (Park) Authority. In lieu of flowers, tax deductible donations may be made in Leon’s honor to the Potosi City Park Inclusive Playground Fund being collected by Washington County Community Partnership as a match to the federal grant for the same project.
A visitation will be Wednesday, September 28, 2022, from 4:30 pm to 8 pm at DeClue Funeral Home. Visitation will resume on Thursday, September 29, 2022, from 9 to 11 am.
A Funeral Service will commence on Thursday, September 29, 2022, at 11 am, officiated by Rev H Wayne Isgriggs, assisted by Elder Leonard Compton. Interment will follow at Redbud Memorial Gardens in Potosi, Missouri.
